New Jersey Devils   News   Schedule   Roster

NHL finally approves deal between Kovalchuk, Devils (SportingNews.com)
It will be the last contract of its kind for the foreseeable future. The NHL made sure of that. But right now, New Jersey Devils fans don't care about the long-term implications. The big news is that Ilya Kovalchuk is signed to a 15-year deal worth $100 million. It's official. It's approved. In all likelihood, he'll retire a member of the Devils. "He's one of the most dynamic players in the league," said Devils goalie Johan Hedberg, who spent four seasons with Kovalchuk in Atlanta.

Bruins GM assures Marc Savard he won't be traded (SportingNews.com)
Apparently unsatisfied with the offers he received for Marc Savard, Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli on Friday said he won't be trading the high-priced center. "We told Marc we are not moving him and he is part of the organization," Chiarelli told ESPNBoston.com. Chiarelli acknowledged fielding proposals for Savard, who is one of the league's top playmakers. Chiarelli broke from his usual policy of not discussing trade rumors, saying he was addressing the Savard talk because it became public.

After adding Kovalchuk, Devils must subtract (SportingNews.com)
They’re getting a guy who is typically a lock for 40 goals a season. They’re getting a star forward who has 642 points in 621 career games. But in signing Ilya Kovalchuk to a 15-year, $100 million contract, it also means the New Jersey Devils will likely have to trade someone away. At least one someone. Even with all the effort that went into making Kovalchuk’s contract one that doesn’t put too much strain on the salary cap, the Devils now are over the cap.

NHL still could penalize Devils in Kovalchuk saga (SportingNews.com)
The National Hockey League on Saturday announced the approval of the Ilya Kovalchuk deal. It also announced new rules governing long-term contracts. But nowhere in the official announcement approving Kovalchuk’s deal was any indication whether the league would follow up the saga with penalties to the New Jersey Devils for the original contract that the NHL was shot down. According to The Record of Hackensack, N.J., the NHL has until 5 p.m. ET on Sept.

Suit threatened if Marc Savard contract is voided (SportingNews.com)
Boston Bruins center Marc Savard has had enough with speculation over whether the NHL might void his seven-year, $28 million contract. His agent, Larry Kelly, on Thursday threatened to sue the league if the deal is rejected. Savard signed his extension last season, at which time the league OK'd it. Now, following fallout from Ilya Kovalchuk's contracts with the New Jersey Devils, the league is poking into several long-term deals to see if they, too, violate terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Devils Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
With training camp approaching, Devils finally worked out the details of a new contract with Ilya Kovalchuk—this time one the NHL could live with. Kovalchuk's agent, Jay Grossman, confirmed to the Associated Press on Sept. 3 that the NHL had approved a revised 15-year, $100 million contract between his client and the Devils, after the league reached an agreement with the NHL Players Association on an amendment regarding long-term contracts. While full details of the contract have yet to be released, signing the talented left wing to a new deal means New Jersey would have to move a body or two to get under the salary cap. The Devils, ready to enter training camp with yet another new coach—this time John MacLean—have basically been issuing...

D-day arrives again for NHL, Ilya Kovalchuk (SportingNews.com)
A decision will finally be made on Ilya Kovalchuk's latest contract. Maybe. The league and the NHLPA agreed on a 5 p.m. ET Friday deadline, one that is fast approaching, and one that will reveal whether the league will approve the 15-year, $100 million contract the New Jersey Devils have submitted. That is unless, of course, another extension is granted. And that appears to be a possibility as the sides work to negotiate parameters in which long-term contracts will be approved moving forward.

NHL, NHLPA agree to extend Ilya Kovalchuk contract deadline (SportingNews.com)
Five days wasn’t enough. The NHL announced on Wednesday that the league and the NHLPA have mutually agreed to extend the deadline to make a ruling on the Ilya Kovalchuk contract. The NHL must now make a decision on the contract before 5 p.m. ET Friday. That would give the league an entire week to review the structure of the second Kovalchuk contract, one submitted by the New Jersey Devils last Friday. An NHL source tells Sporting News that it's a 15-year deal, worth $100 million and the Devils believe it addresses many of the concerns the league had with...
