Why sports fans care so much about their teams — even when they move away
The National Hockey League is more than halfway through its current season. That means the Utah Hockey Club, the team formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes, has played more than half a season in its new state. The Coyotes called the Valley home for 27 seasons, but the threat of re-location was there during many of them, especially recently -—from questions of ownership to debate over a suitable arena where they would actually play their games. I personally never really got into the Coyotes; I rooted for them to do well, but didn't follow the team that closely. And, I'm a pretty big sports fan — while baseball's my favorite, either in person or on TV, I enjoy watching just about any sport. While

AHSHA Championship proves hockey still thriving in Arizona
Mullett Arena, a building that used to house an NHL franchise, saw a few thousand fans gather Saturday to celebrate the persistence of hockey in Arizona. While their main goal was to support two deserving teams in the Arizona High School Hockey Association Division I State Championship, their presence proved that less than a year after the Arizona Coyotes played their final home game in the state, the sport is still thriving in the desert. This was the third consecutive year that AHSHA held its state title game at Mullett Arena.

Matt Shott Arizona Hockey Legacy Foundation growing hockey in Arizona
In Arizona and across the country, many ice rinks are private and free to operate without answering to anyone when making decisions. A 10-year employee of the Arizona Coyotes, Shott died in 2021 at just 34 years old after a lengthy battle with liver cancer. Last week, it was announced that he will be inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame for his efforts. Now three years after his death, his lasting impact is doing the work to continue the sport's growth through the Matt Shott Arizona Hockey Foundation.

The inaugural season for the Utah Hockey Club has gone better than many expected, and it appears they are set to get another boost before the campaign ends. According to a recent report, the team is set to bring over one of their top prospects currently playing in Russia. The Utah Hockey Club selected defenseman Dmitry Simashev with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2023 NHL Draft. Currently playing in the KHL with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, one of the top organizations in the KHL, a recent article from RG.org states that Simashev will sign his entry-level contract with Utah once his current season ends.
