20 years ago, Dallas Stars' goalie blamed a terrible Stanley Cup loss on cough syrup
years ago, Dallas Stars’ goalie blamed a terrible Stanley Cup loss on cough syrup In the Hall of Fame of Excuses, cough syrup ranks ahead of “the dog who ate my homework,“ the “something came up with my kids,” and “It must have gotten lost in the mail. But 20 years ago, there was the goalie of the Dallas Stars telling the world the reason he played so poorly in a Stanley Cup Finals game was none other than cough syrup.

Blues Coach Craig Berube Supports NHL's Playoff Format
The 2019-20 NHL regular season is officially over, Commissioner Gary Bettman announced Tuesday, but 24 of the league’s 30 teams – the top 12 in each conference – will compete in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The top four seeds in the Eastern Conference (the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, and Philadelphia Flyers) and the top four seeds in the Western Conference (the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, and Dallas Stars) essentially have a bye into the f...

Dallas Stars: Analyzing Their Situation In NHL's Return To Play Format
The 2019-20 NHL regular season is officially over, and the Dallas Stars are still in the fight. They will take part in the 24-team Return To Play format that the NHL announced on Tuesday, slotting in as a top-four seed in the Western Conference and receiving an automatic bid into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After an encouraging 2018-19 campaign that saw them fall one goal short of a trip to the Western Conference Finals, the expectations were high for the Dallas Stars to not only make the playoffs...

Shortening MLB, NBA, NHL seasons over COVID should mean champions get asterisks
The details are noble and laughable, but what the NHL is getting right is that when it returns its playing the playoffs, and that’s it. June is days away, and the true spirit of the NBA, MLB and NHL seasons are all gone. The NHL’s goal is to get something done for the record books, make a few bucks, and move on to next season ASAP.

The biggest winners and losers of the NHL's 24-team playoff format announcement
On Tuesday, just before 5 p.m. ET, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the NHL will return with a 24-team “return-to-play” playoff format, if and when it’s deemed safe to return. Sure, golf has already returned in many ways and is set to return for real in a few weeks, but the NHL is the first of the four major pro sports leagues to announce a return (the NFL doesn’t really count for this since it may start on time anyway, but whatever). It should go without saying that whining over whether or not this format is fair for your favorite team's Stanley Cup chances while there’s a pandemic going on seems very silly, but it also makes things seem somewhat normal again.

Here's what Phase 2 of the NHL's plan to restart the season means for the Dallas Stars
Those people will only be allowed to work with one group, meaning the Stars will likely have to use personnel from AHL affiliate Texas to fill those roles. Each group will be designated a shift that will not overlap with another group and allow for cleaning and disinfecting between sessions. Here is some other notable information from the NHL's memo: – If excess testing is available in each particular city, players will be tested for COVID-19 via a nasal swab two days before entering the facilit...

Jim Montgomery on Stars dismissal, road to sobriety: 'That firing was deserved'
Former Dallas Stars head coach Jim Montgomery spoke publicly for the first time since he was fired by the team on Dec. 10 for "unprofessional conduct." In an interview with TSN's Pierre LeBrun, Montgomery revealed his battle with and recovery from alcoholism. He said the team was justified in its decision to remove him as head coach.

Cap Compliance: Dallas Stars
Restricted Free Agents Radek Faksa ($2.2 million) Denis Gurianov ($894,166) Roope Hintz ($811,667) AJ Scholz: After completing his entry-level contract, Faksa inked a three-year, $6.6 million deal that retained his RFA rights, which is likely the exact same offer the club will make to Hintz, who is currently on the same point trajectory as Faksa was three years ago. Meanwhile, Faksa has turned into a consistent 30-point producer, with the exception of this season.

Dallas Stars Biweekly Links: Whatever Happens, Rick Bowness Is Plotting A Course For It
Big-league sports are slowly making their way back into public life, and the public is hungry for more. From NASCAR to Major League Soccer to the Triple Crown, each present and projected return is stoking excitement – even though fans still can’t buy tickets for the events themselves. The National Hockey League remains suspended in TBA limbo.

What Makes Dallas Stars Fans Different?
One final note: I think it’s a given that every city will embody its particular geographical ethos, so I’m not interested in talking about What It Means To Be Texan, or anything like that. Most every city has a distinct identity. We’re talking here not of citizenship, but the experience of affiliation with a team.
