Sporting News NHL preview schedule (SportingNews.com)
Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe.

Stars Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
| The Stars are trying to get back to their former postseason form. Well, basically, they're just trying to get back into the postseason.
The last two seasons have been pretty forgettable for the Stars, who were once playoff regulars but not so much lately. With a sale still hanging over the team's head and a roster that didn't get many additions because of budget constraints, the Stars are going to have to rely on some of their proven veterans and get strong leadership.
Enter Brenden Morrow. The Stars captain will have to step up again this season as the Stars try to find their identity and a path back to winning ways. Morrow didn't get that "C" because he couldn't do this job. Back in the 2008 postseason he lifted the Stars through their Western Conference semifinals against... |

Canadiens pick up veteran center Jeff Halpern (SportingNews.com)
In a conference full of elite players, the Montreal Canadiens believe they've found a guy who can shut them down -- Jeff Halpern, a 34-year-old veteran whom they signed on Tuesday. Frustrated by a summer of inability to find a job, Halpern cut a one-year contract worth $600,000, according to the Montreal Gazette. That's a comedown from the four-year, $2 million accord he finished last season before becoming an unrestricted free agent. In 720 career games with the Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning and Los Angeles Kings, Halpern...

Jonathan Cheechoo gets tryout with Dallas Stars (SportingNews.com)
Right winger Jonathan Cheechoo is headed back out West. The Dallas Stars announced Saturday that the former San Jose Sharks standout has accepted a tryout invitation. "We're pleased that Jonathan has accepted our invitation to come to our training camp," Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said in a release. "He has shown the ability to be an effective scorer in this league." Cheechoo's career descent continued last season after he was traded to the Ottawa Senators in the deal that sent Dany Heatley to San Jose.

Stars get D Nicklas Grossman signed to two-year contract (SportingNews.com)
Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk's to-do list shrank Thursday with the signing of restricted free agent defenseman Nicklas Grossman. A rising player at 25, Grossman accepted a two-year, $3.25 million deal. Grossman played 71 games last season and finished with seven assists and 32 penalty minutes. In 2008-09, he had career highs in goals (two), assists (10) and points (12). His primary asset is as a shutdown defenseman. Often paired with veteran Stephane Robidas last season, he was good until late last season.

Free agent Willie Mitchell signs with Kings (SportingNews.com)
Defenseman Willie Mitchell, perhaps the top remaining unrestricted free agent not named Ilya Kovalchuk on the market, signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. Mitchell, 33, had made a free-agent tour over the past week and a half, visiting the Kings, San Jose Sharks and Washington Capitals while retaining interest in the Vancouver Canucks, for whom he has played the past four seasons. Mitchell appears fully recovered from a season-ending concussion in mid-January.
