Sporting News NHL preview schedule (SportingNews.com)
Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe.

Predators, Cody Franson finally close on contract (SportingNews.com)
What might be the Nashville Predators' last piece of business before training camp fell into place Wednesday when defenseman Cody Franson signed a two-year, $1.6 million contract. A restricted free agent, Franson hit his stride with the team last season and appears to be a key piece in the defense corps after the departure of Dan Hamhuis this offseason. Franson, who is 6-5, 213 pounds, played 61 games last season and in four of the Predators' six playoff games.

Predators Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Patric Hornqvist is coming off an outstanding season for the Predators, a performance good enough to prompt the Predators to pay him $9.25 million over the next three years. Hornqvist led the team with 30 goals, the fourth-highest production in the history of the franchise. He also led the team in power play goals with 10. His 51 points tied for the team lead, and he set a team franchise record for shots in a season with 275. Associate coach Brent Peterson stressed that everyone knew a deal would be completed with Hornqvist. The goal was to get it completed well before training camp begins. "We wanted to have all hands on deck when we got going," Peterson said. "If you start late in training camp you are always behind.

Ilya Kovalchuk's agent looks back at a long, hot summer (SportingNews.com)
Ilya Kovalchuk wasn't the only high-profile potential 2010 free agent Jay Grossman had as a client. But one of them, goalie Pekka Rinne, got a deal to remain with the Nashville Predators before the regular season ended -- a two-year, $6.8 million contract that looked awfully good for Rinne in hindsight. Another one, defenseman Anton Volchenkov, was done fairly quickly when Grossman and the New Jersey Devils negotiated a deal on July 1. The good fortune led to somebody asking Grossman a question on the first day of free agency: "You expect Kovy to be...

Predators pad defense corps with Aaron Johnson (SportingNews.com)
At 27, defenseman Aaron Johnson has been around the block a few times in the NHL. His latest career turn came Tuesday, when he signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Nashville Predators. The accord, the Nashville Tennessean reports, will pay him $550,000 for NHL time and $105,000 for the Predators' AHL Milwaukee affiliate. Johnson was an unrestricted free agent and should provide veteran depth to the Predators. The team has yet to come to terms with defenseman Cody Franson, a restricted free agent who had six goals and 15 assists in 61 games during his...

Agent: Paul Kariya won't play this season; concussion problem (SportingNews.com)
The reunion with Teemu Selanne will have to wait. Unrestricted free agent forward Paul Kariya won't play during the 2010-11 season, according to a statement released on Friday by his agent. "After being examined by concussion specialist Dr. Mark Lovell, Paul is not able to play hockey due to post-concussion syndrome," agent Don Baizley said in a release distributed by the NHLPA. According to the Orange County Register, Kariya, 35, was seen skating locally and Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray was considering bringing Kariya back to Anaheim to play...

Agent for Marc Staal: We want a deal with Rangers (SportingNews.com)
As negotiations between the New York Rangers and restricted free agent Marc Staal drag on into late August, rumors of pending offer sheets for the talented young defenseman have started to surface. But offer sheets aren’t the focus right now, said Staal agent Paul Krepelka of the Orr Hockey Group. “The report of an offer sheet is absolutely unfounded and our priority and focus is on finalizing a deal with the Rangers,” Krepelka wrote in an e-mail to Sporting News.
