EBR Literacy Blueprint showing positive results |
It's no secret that students in Louisiana and East Baton Rouge Parish have struggled with literacy for years. Last summer, less than half of students were meeting their grade level average reading skills. A new blueprint aimed at bumping literacy levels in East Baton Rouge Parish schools is trying to change that. “If a student can't read by the third grade, they won't have a chance to graduate on time,” EBR Chief of Literacy Shenoa Warren said. |

The Editorial Board: A better deal for taxpayers on security costs at KeyBank Center |
The Erie County Legislature has remedied a long-standing problem by approving an agreement governing the cost of security at KeyBank Center. For that, taxpayers can thank County Comptroller Kevin Hardwick. With the Legislature's vote, the Erie County Sheriff's Office can sign a four-year agreement with the Buffalo Sabres to staff all KeyBank Center events,. If concluded, the Sabres will pay an escalating sum, equivalent to $1.38 million over the term of the contract. |

Sabres Foundation to donate literacy hubs to Buffalo schools; Sabres Alumni Beer and Wine Festival returns in March |
The Buffalo Sabres today announced that the Buffalo Sabres Foundation will donate literacy hubs to schools in Buffalo as a partner in the WNY Literacy Initiative, a collaborative effort aimed at improving literacy rates for children in Western New York. The Buffalo Sabres Literacy Hubs will provide students in Buffalo schools with decodable books and resources that will support the ongoing work in schools to teach children to read using science-aligned instruction. In addition, the launch of the Buffalo Sabres Literacy Hubs is intended to highlight the critical role that literacy plays in determining educational and life outcomes. |

Hold or trade: Second half fantasy outlook for NHL all stars |
While David Pastrnak endeavors to price himself out of the Bruins' future budget, Roman Josi once again checks each box across the scoring and non-scoring board, Connor Hellebuyck performs at his shot-stopping best in nearly every game, and that one-two punch in Edmonton continues to, somehow, exceed already lofty expectations. Players who, for the most part, deserved to be selected much higher than they were on fantasy draft day. The NHL All-Star Weekend begins with the Skills Competition on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN and ESPN+. |

Linus Ullmark, fellow All-Star goalies show Sabres need to be patient with UPL |
Vasilevskiy joked with his teammate, Nikita Kucherov, and politely answered each question from the small groups of reporters that shuffled from player to player. Despite two Stanley Cup wins and a Vezina Trophy, Vasilevskiy didn't draw a crowd like the immensely talented forwards who will participate in the weekend festivities. |

Sabres' Most Memorable All-Star Game Moments |
As the hockey world descends upon Southern Florida this weekend, let's take a look back at some of the times Sabres players stood out the most at the yearly spectacle. The Sabres took center stage at the 1977 All-Star Game held at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum. Goaltender Gerry Desjardins, defenseman Jim Schoenfeld and forwards Gilbert Perreault and Rick Martin (two-thirds of the French Connection) were selected to the Wales Conference's lineup. |

About Last Night: Empty the Tank |
Last night's match had all the narrative to just be a throwaway loss for the Carolina Hurricanes. Was it the Carolina Hurricanes on the ice last night or the Harlem Globetrotters? Nearly every goal came courtesy of a brilliant display of passing as the Hurricanes victimized the porous Sabres defense. First it was Teuvo Teravainen on the power play, finding Sebastian Aho on the backdoor. |

Stormy Weather as Sabres Fall to Hurricanes |
The only Buffalo player that seemed to show up in the opening was January's “Rookie of the Month”: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Despite his best efforts, the Canes earned a three-goal lead. The Aho and Burns back door tap-ins were particularly hard to swallow for Sabre fans hoping to see their team utilize fresh legs against a team that played an overtime game the night before. Other than a great shot from Alex Tuch, the film from that first is better off used as fertilizer. |

County Judge Susan Eagan, a designated Youth Part judge, also ordered the teen to serve five years of post-release supervision. The first happened on March 8, when the teen, joined by other unknown participants, displayed what looked like a pistol and stole food and $17 from a delivery driver on Donovan Drive in Buffalo. |
