Matthew Tkachuk scores in return, Florida Panthers defeat Buffalo Sabres 3-2
Matthew Tkachuk scored a goal and had an assist in his return from injury and the Florida Panthers defeated the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Tuesday night. Tkachuk gave Florida a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal with 4:24 to go in the first period and the team never relinquished it to win for the eighth time in nine games and move into a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference with the idle Boston Bruins. "You never like missing games," Tkachuk said. Sam Bennett and Brandon Montour also scored for the Panthers while Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves.

Hamilton: Granato loses cool with officials, costs Sabres game-winning goal in Florida
Just like most National Hockey League games, Tuesday's matchup between the Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers was a poorly officiated game. The NHL, like the NFL, has a huge problem on its hands, because too many games are decided by really bad referees. Sabres head coach Don Granato got so frustrated that in the third period, he blew a gasket after Zach Benson got a tripping penalty, and ended up putting his team down two men for a full two minutes. When you're in a tight 2-1 game against the No. 1 team in the NHL, the last thing you can do is put your team in position to kill a 5-on-3 for two minutes.

Sabres' season-opening high aspirations are but a faint glimmer in falling further out of contention
A week ago, after the Sabres dropped consecutive 3-1 losses coming out of their bye week break, defenseman Rasmus Dahlin refused to consider his team’s season-long inconsistencies by insisting Buffalo still had time to climb into the playoff picture. “In my head, I can’t be thinking like you guys,” Dahlin said, referring to reporters, while noting there were still 31 games left in the season. A week later, the playoff picture appears even gloomier after the Sabres (24-27-4) split their past four games following a 4-3 loss to Anaheim on Monday.

Wild cough up late equalizer in 3-2 overtime loss to Sabres
In the thick of a playoff race that's looking like it will require a photo finish, the Wild banking five out of a possible six points in a week is a job well done. Period. "We played some really good hockey and [a] style of game that gives us the best chance to win," coach John Hynes said. But going 6-for-6 would have been better, and it was a real possibility. The Wild lost the lead in the ...
