Atlanta Thrashers   News   Schedule   Roster

Thrashers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
A year after inviting free agent forward Maxim Afinogenov to camp on a tryout basis, the Thrashers are hoping the same invitation revives the career of hard-hitting defenseman Kyle McLaren. McLaren, 33, hasn't played in the NHL since 2008 after being waived by the San Jose Sharks and sent to the AHL. Bringing McLaren to camp on a tryout basis won't cost the Thrashers anything and will allow new general manager Rick Dudley to assess his team's defensive needs. If the 6-foot-4, 220-pound McLaren is able to return to the form that made him the ninth overall pick in 1995 by Boston, the Thrashers will surely keep him around. Even if he's not the dominant blueliner he once was, McLaren would add depth and experience as a fifth or sixth defenseman on a young Thrashers roster.

KHL trying to lure Slava Kozlov (SportingNews.com)
Ilya Kovalchuk may not end up in the KHL but his good friend and longtime teammate Slava Kozlov just might. According to Pavel Lysenkov of Sovetsky Sport, the KHL is pushing hard to lure the unrestricted free agent winger away from the NHL. Lysenkov reports that four KHL teams are negotiating with Kozlov and Slava Fetisov, Kozlov’s former teammate in Detroit, is hoping he signs with CSKA. "He knows all the necessary phone numbers. If he decides to play for CSKA, he'll call," Fetisov told Lysenkov.

Agent for Marc Staal: We want a deal with Rangers (SportingNews.com)
As negotiations between the New York Rangers and restricted free agent Marc Staal drag on into late August, rumors of pending offer sheets for the talented young defenseman have started to surface. But offer sheets aren’t the focus right now, said Staal agent Paul Krepelka of the Orr Hockey Group. “The report of an offer sheet is absolutely unfounded and our priority and focus is on finalizing a deal with the Rangers,” Krepelka wrote in an e-mail to Sporting News.

Thrashers sign Little, set sights on Bergfors (SportingNews.com)
He scored 31 goals at age 21, but that number dropped to just 13 last year. So why did Bryan Little’s goal-production suffer so much from one year to the next? “That’s been the question of my summer,” Little said, laughing. “It’s funny, because I don’t think when I was playing my caliber dropped off.” Apparently, the Atlanta Thrashers didn’t think so either. On Monday, they announced the signing of Little to a three-year deal. It’s worth a total of $7.15 million, according to an NHL source.

Thrashers turn to Bergfors, Little (SportingNews.com)
Having added defenseman Freddy Meyer to the roster on Thursday, Atlanta Thrashers brass turns to deals with returning forwards Bryan Little and Niclas Bergfors. Re-signing them is next on the team's priority list, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution . The team also is weighing a deal with defenseman Andrei Zubarev, who is working out at the Thrashers' Duluth, Ga., practice facility. Deals are expected to be announced this week, possibly for all three players.
