Lightning's Cooper vs. Stars' Bowness is NHL coaching first
Two nights after the Dallas Stars advanced to the Stanley Cup Final, their coaching staff was seated at a table for dinner in the NHL bubble right next to their counterparts from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Lightning coach Jon Cooper got to chat with former assistant Rick Bowness, who has the Stars in the final after taking over the head job on an interim basis in December. ''It was good to see him, and I congratulated him,'' Cooper said.

Captain Steven Stamkos is out, Brayden Point is hurting and Anthony Cirelli is hobbling, too. The Tampa Bay Lightning enter the Stanley Cup Final against the Dallas Stars with several key players dealing with injuries the team somehow was able to withstand during an impressive run to the Eastern Conference championship. Stars, Lightning meet in nontraditional Stanley Cup Final
The leaves are starting to change color around the NHL playoff bubble, and, at most, seven games remain before the Stanley Cup is handed out. On Saturday night, two of the league's southernmost teams begin a Stanley Cup Final like none other in the great white north when the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning face off in Game 1. ''We don't know what the temperature is outside because we're never outside, so it doesn't come into play,'' Stars general manager Jim Nill said from the confines of the bubble.

Lightning put past behind in advancing to Stanley Cup Final
Jon Cooper experienced difficulty in finding the right words. Emotionally spent following a 2-1 overtime Eastern Conference final series-clinching win over the New York Islanders, the usually articulate Tampa Bay Lightning coach searched putting into perspective what it meant to be returning to the Stanley Cup Final with much of the team's core still intact from its previous trip in 2015. Before he could look ahead to facing the Dallas Stars in Game 1 on Saturday, Cooper revisited the adversity the Lightning faced since losing to Chicago in six games five years ago.

Blues hire Montgomery as assistant months after Stars firing
Jim Montgomery is getting a second chance to coach in the NHL after being hired by the St. Louis Blues as an assistant coach less than a year since he was fired by the Dallas Stars for unprofessional conduct. Montgomery was fired in December, 32 games into his second season as Stars coach, for what general manager Jim Nill said was behavior inconsistent with ''core values and beliefs of the Dallas Stars and the National Hockey League.'' The 51-year-old on Wednesday said he has been sober for over nine months now. ''Sometimes it takes an unbearable consequence in your life to happen to have an unbelievable breakthrough, and that's the way I look at it,'' Montgomery said in a video interview conducted by the Blues.

Lightning face adversity and Islanders in East final Game 6
Jon Cooper might have reacted differently five years ago to losing in double overtime in Tampa Bay's first chance to move on to the Stanley Cup Final, sulking with his head down and kicking the nearest soda can. Sure, the Lightning didn't close out the New York Islanders in five games in the Eastern Conference final like they did against their previous two opponents. ''Adversity's kicked us in the butt a ton of times in these playoffs,'' Cooper said Wednesday.

Islanders forward Jordan Eberle knew exactly what to do upon seeing teammate and captain Anders Lee pounce on the loose puck once Tampa Bay's Kevin Shattenkirk whiffed on his shot from the right point. Eberle raced up the middle, drove to the net and converted Lee's pass to cap a two-on-one break and keep the Islanders' playoff hopes alive. Kitchen not back with Panthers amid report he kicked player
Assistant coach Mike Kitchen will not return to the Florida Panthers next season among a series of staffing changes announced Tuesday. Canada's TSN reported Kitchen kicked a Panthers player on the bench during a game in January and the team held an internal investigation. Kitchen oped out of coaching in the NHL's postseason for personal reasons, saying in July: ''It was a difficult decision to say the least but the right decision for me and my family.'' The 64-year-old rejoined coach Joel Quenneville behind the bench this season for the first time since 2016-17, and the two won the Stanley Cup together twice with Chicago.
